Sunday Brunch @ Belgrave Music Hall, Leeds

In December 2013 Laynes Espresso, the much loved coffee establishment set up a Sunday brunch pop-up at Belgrave Music Hall and Canteen which went down a storm. Well it went down so well that Laynes have started serving Sunday brunch the 1st Sunday of every month, much to the delight of many, myself included (last time it was fab) !!!

I arrived at 12:01pm and already it was busy with a steady stream of hungry Leeds folk. Luckily for me I was one of the first to order so I watched as the queue lengthened!!

imageLaynes man Carl Fleischer is behind the menu and they aren’t going for your standard brunch fair like Full English or eggs Benedict,  I love both of these as much as anyone but they’ve gone for a more interesting menu, such as Sweet corn fritters and Shakshuka. They also have some delicious sweet treats like Lamingtons on offer too, as well as the coffee that Laynes are so well known for.

For me it was a toss up between Welsh Rarebit and Shakshuka. I succumbed to the Shakshuka, after just this morning I’d re-watched one of Yottam Ottolenghi’s Mediterranean Feast programmes! In the episode he made a Shakshuka with minced beef and smoked aubergine!!

On first glance it looked lovely with great vibrant colours. In terms of taste…oh it was good, VERY GOOD!!! Lots of flavour, every ingredient was distinct and complemented one another and there was just enough feta to give that creamy salty hit, without overpowering the dish. With its lovely golden runny egg yolk, plenty of coriander and a warming heat running through it I loved it!!!

Well worth a quick jaunt into town!!! Laynes are serving Sunday Brunch on the 1st Sunday of every month now from 12-4pm. I’d recommend arriving there early doors so you can get a table, sit down and relax with a great coffee and a plate of yummy food!

    1. It’s a great place!!! The Shakshuka was very tasty, I still need to try and make the one I saw Ottolenghi make on his tv programme. Will have to get the recipe off the website!!
